Happy Endings Review: What Would Kerry Washington Do?

$

Double the Happy Endings, double the gut splitting laughs!

That's right, we now get a pair of new episodes a week of the underrated comedy. "Fowl Play/Date" marked the return of not only this awesome sitcom you all need to watch so ABC notices the ratings, but also the return of Alex's racist parrot!

That's right, Tyler's back! Unfortunately for him, his avian life of spewing hateful remarks was cut short.

How Will Alex React?

When Alex is out of town at Rom Com Con, Brad and Penny make one faux pas after another and find themselves in need of a fixer. Cue the Kerry Washington and Scandal references! Only, unfortunately, Brad and Penny's plan didn't include a hot makeout with the POTUS. First, they knock over Alex's childhood memento of her handprint that was damn huge. Then, they think they killed Tyler the racist parrot

It turns out that Alex killed the bird because she's the ditziest blonde since Amanda Seyfried's boobs could detect the weather in Mean Girls. She got wasted off of margaritas with her parrot. Didn't she learn that alcohol and animals don't mix from those d-bags who feed beer to someone's dog at parties in high school?

Alex did look super hot at the funeral. Thank goodness for that bird autopsy or Brad's guilt might have eaten him alive. Is his turn as a house-husband making him more paranoid and sensitive? Still love him, doesn't matter!

Not hot? Jane and Dave's set ups for Max. Or as Max would say, Jamie and "Neil Patrick Niles." I love me some Jane and Dave, but they are unique and we don't need two of them! Also, I have no doubt that Jane would give off more of a scent of testosterone than Dave.

When did we all turn against Mayer? | permalink

Uh Dave, have you ever read an interview with Mayer? If that's who inspires you, no wonder your songs had such sexual innuendos.

Just a word on Rom Com Con: does that actually exist? Seriously, between that and Hip Hop Santa, Happy Endings keeps mentioning things I'm desperate to find in real life. Help a reviewer out and let me know!

Happy Endings Review: Manly Tasks and Man Droughts

Is it possible that my favorite ditzy blonde, Alex Kerkovich, made a really timely and relevant joke? In Happy Endings second episode of the week, "Ordinary Extrodinary Love," yes, she certainly did!

Usually rebranding doesn't work. Look at KFC. I'm sorry but you guys will always be Kitchen Fresh Chicken to me! | permalink

You know KFC, right? The same place that was in the news today because a customer found a brain or kidney in their food? Yum! (warning: clicking on that link will bring you to the graphic image of said brain.)

Obviously this episode was written and filmed awhile ago but still: go Alex for the timeliness of that line! Especially since her taste in music dates her back to the era of Smash Mouth...

Publicity Gone Wrong

So it's been two days since we last saw the Happy Endings crew and Max is still in a man-drought. Thankfully, instead of another plot device plucked directly from an old episode of Friends, Jane tossed her Gwen Stefani party clothes back on and she and Derrick took Max man hunting.

Well, it wasn't just the drought that had Max feeling like he had to convert to heterosexuality. Seriously was that an amazing rant or what?

That's right I'm straight now. From this moment forward, it's gonna be a steady diet of boobs and dudes. Dammit. I am no longer interested in men, I am only interested in...mankind. From this moment forward it will be a steady diet of chicks with...di-AMMIT! I love guys. My favorite thing to touch is va-penis. | permalink

Truthfully, half of the awesomeness of that rant was Adam Pally's delivery of it. Max felt like he didn't fit into any of the gay guy sub-groups that Derrick mentioned. After a disheartening night of clubbing and a close call of chest shaving with greek yogurt, Max decided to create his own dating ad. I have to say, that guy who showed up was pretty cute!

Speaking of cute guys, where has Pete been? Did he and Penny break up and I missed it? All of her office jokes about her being a train-wreck were kind of lame. Especially because Penny is ah-mah-zing. Duh. It doesn't matter that Penny still knows everything only a teenager should and knows lyrics to every cheesy pop song. Her PR 101 was pretty spot on.

What did you guys think of Brad and Dave's pissing contest? Who is more manly? I kinda think Brad would rock a purse on a regular basis anyway. And yes I know that it was also a storyline on Friends when Joey had a purse from Ralph Lauren. Sitcoms recycle storylines, c'est la vie!

ABC President Touts S.H.I.E.L.D, Renewed Focus of Revenge and More!

Paul Lee couldn't hide it at the Television Critics Association winter press your today: it's been a rough TV season so far for ABC.

“We have a lot to shout about," said the network's entertainment president said, before adding: "And we also have a lot to do."

Looking ahead to the series that could really help ABC get back on track, Lee said the script for Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D. is "great" and will likely be fast-tracked to series.

Paul Lee

“You know how Joss is so high/low?" Lee asked. "How he’s able to be intense and epic and suddenly funny/silly? He’s got that ability to be super-entertaining.”

Lee went on to compare the series to Once Upon a Time in terms of its " ability to bring the whole family" into the living room. It's hard to imagine this isn't on ABC's fall schedule.

Among other quotes and highlights:

  • Revenge Season 2 has grown too "big," but: “I know [series creator] Mike Kelley is excited about focusing on our lead characters and their emotional journey.”
  • Why did Dancing with the Stars All-Stars fare so poorly? “Turns out people want to see bad dancing as much as they want to see good dancing,
  • Lee adores Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23, referring to them as "water cooler shows." Can he commit to their renewals? Not quite, but: “I can tell you these are shows that we love.”
  • He blamed the cancellation of Last Resort on its failure to connect with women and was surprised by the demise of 666 Park Avenue because it tested well.
  • Scandal, however? It's “just rocking and rolling,” Lee said. “Shonda is passionate about this show. It’s a huge credit to her that it’s so different from Grey’s.”

Happy Endings Review: The Found Episode

For those who didn't know, ABC and its weird scheduling left out an episode at the end of Happy Endings Season 2 called "Kickball 2: The Kickening."

It aired in the UK and could be found online, but now that we're getting a weekly double dose of our favorite friends from Chicago, ABC decided to let the episode see the light of day on a Sunday evening.

Good thing because the Happy Endings crew brought its A game to the kickball tournament! Of course, I mean their A game in entertainment - because this group is not really a collection of fine athletes if we're being honest. In fact, they're pretty sad.

The Kickball Dilemma

Alex's store "Xela" sponsored the team. It's pronounced Shayla which, I don't think I ever even realized, nor did her best friends.

I didn't even know you could pronounce the name of your store. I thought it was a four letter Celtic symbol for failure. | permalink

Nice Dave, nice. We all know that Alex doesn't run the most successful store around, but it was a nice gesture. Unfortunately, it was too late for the competitive Jane, who had already signed up to play on the autobody shop's team. And we all know that once Jane commits, she commits.

Pissed that Jane was a traitor, Penny treated us to a hilarious Miami Heat joke (not the first from these writers) when she referred to Jane as "LeBlonde Jane." Lebron James traitor jokes just never get old, especially for this New Yorker.

Jane likes to be on a winning team and the Xela crew is just not the best around. Penny wants to play in 6-inch heels so she can attract a guy, Dave has the yips from an incident when he hit Penny in the head with a ball, Brad only knows how to bunt and Max has delegated himself to the manager role. Then there's  Scotty, who is addicted to steroids and is a hot mess who is physically falling apart by a second.

I love Happy Endings episodes that combine all of the friends together in the same storyline. Plus, with a number of good Happy Endings quotes, this lost episode was a treat!

The guest starring gig of Lance Briggs of the Chicago Bears was a good touch, as was the flashback rivalry between the Kerkovich sisters.

While the episode seemed a little out of place considering it was from last season, I'm still glad they aired it. Did you enjoy the lost Happy Endings kickball episode?

Happy Endings Review: Jane's Not-So Phase

$

On "The Ex-Factor," it was discovered that Jane's lesbianism exactly a phase when her ex-girlfriend, Ryan, stops by while the rest of the six-pack are off enjoying their own comedic story lines.

Brad and Jane are so open and honest with each other that they're allowed a dinner when each of their exes are in town, even when one turns out to be a gorgeous female instead of a dude. Get these two an award because they're the best married couple on TV.

Jane's Secret

But it was all fun and games until it was revealed that Jane did indeed love Ryan, which begged to question: which gender is she actually into? Brad then invited his ex, Melissa, over for dinner along with Ryan. It was a battle of the pasts when Brad crossed the line by revealing that he and Melissa went as far as socks off sex.

Hysterical is the only word I can use to describe their scenes this week. Jane Kerkovich is at the top of her game on Happy Endings Season 3. Blame Eliza Coupe, she's one bad chick. She's on a whole new level and it works every single episode. I am a Jane Kerkovich fangirl.

Meanwhile, Penny was trying to hang out with Pete's group of friends, who were not so "amahzing." They didn't approve of Penny's pile on insults and comedic ways. Bitches, please, Penny is way better than all of you, so take your stank eye and move it elsewhere. Pete, you're a good looking guy who is sweet, funny and kind; you deserve better friends.

Though, admittedly it was nice to see one of the six friends venture out and hang out with a whole new set group of pals. I know we've seen Jane and Brad with work friends, but never anything like Pete's friend. They were boring.

Can we all say how sexy Chase was? Hello, guest star Mark-Paul Gosselaar! Age has treated you well because I don't remember you being that pretty on Saved by the Bell. I loved just how determined Alex, Max and Dave were to befriend Chase and bring him into their circle. I think everyone knew it would backfire and miserably.

I hope that his threat to Max means that he will be back. That is, if this show lasts.

Which has me thinking: What is wrong with the world? How are more people not watching Happy Endings? This sitcom is so brilliant. It's my favorite comedy on TV right now. You don't find six characters like Jane, Brad, Alex, Penny, Dave and Max very often that mesh perfectly together.

You have Alex, who never catches on but is smart in the stupidest way - and her equal is Dave because he's just as dumb, but together they're smart. Then there's Penny, who is the creative, naive, but installment one - and Max is her equal who fills her need for drama. My favorite are Jane and Brad, who love each other so very much.

I'll be terribly sad if this goes. Pass along the word to watch Happy Endings. It's great comedy.

Andy Richter to Guest Star on Happy Endings

He's already controlled the universe. Now Andy Richter will try to control his daughter on Happy Endings Season 3.

The actor has landed a guest spot on the hilarious ABC comedy, TV Line confirms. He will soon stop by as Penny's father, showing up just as her relationship is growing serious with Nick Zano's Pete.

Richter Pic

Richter, who serves as Conan O’Brien’s sidekick on TBS of course, will appear some time this spring and, yes, the relatively small age difference between father and daughter will be addressed.

Megan Mullally, meanwhile, has guest-starred this season on Happy Endings as Penny's (singing) mom.

Happy Endings Review: Revenge Hits Chicago

A hot blonde who likes to serve up revenge? Sorry Emily Thorne, wrong ABC show.

Nope, "The Marry Prankster" wasn't a new episode of Revenge, where people have their lives ruined by a girl out for justice for her father.

It was an ah-mahzing episode of Happy Endings when a group of friends were terrorized by an evil genius named Max Blum. Except, wait... it turns out Max wasn't the real mastermind after all!

Brad's New Job

Alex Kerkovich, you little whiz kid. You're not the dumb blonde everyone thought you were! To think she's orchestrated that entire prank war with the flyer "subs for guns" is frighteningly hilarious. The scary part, really, just being the gun stuff. Dave probably wet himself in his sandwich truck, but wouldn't you?

So why would Max go after everyone when it was really just Dave (or really Alex) who pranked him?

Pen, I live by mafia rules; you, your family, anybody in the room. Y'all gotta pay. That's how I roll. | permalink

To me this was one of the best Happy Endings episodes of all-time. Max is seriously the master of pranks and I love practical jokes. He knew how to go after each and every one of them. Well, Jane's was a little eh, he could've done wayyyy better for Jane. Especially because Jane is usually kind of an evil genius herself. However, having to swim in a kid's ball pit with her hubby before he used the diaper fork was probably karma enough.

Loved the scene with her and Brad when he was covered in stripper glitter. Every scene these two have as a couple shines. And, no, that's not a pun for how shiny brad looked with all that stripper glitter rubbed up on him. At first I fully thought that he pulled off the fake proposal, which would have been too mean! But that scene, when he and Penny realized that it wasn't him and Penny was actually getting engaged, was golden. I just want a gif of Max screaming "you go girl!"

Dave's reaction to the limo far surpassed what I could've ever hoped for. By the way, did anyone notice when Dave was hiding behind the bushes that his frosted tips are looking a little more like gray tips? Just an observation.

There's not much more to say than I love love loved this episode. How about you? Who had the best prank? Did you see Alex as the mastermind? Hit the comments! Also, a very big Mazel Tov to Penny and Pete!

It was really hard to top the first episode of this week's Happy Endings, "The Marry Prankster." However, a solid effort was still put in to the second installment, "Our Best Friend's Wedding."

After all, you couldn't expect our favorite neurotic and over the top Penny Hartz to get engaged without some sort of wedding planning episode, right?

Jane Convinces the Gang

Just as much as we couldn't miss out on Jane milking everything out of the idea of being a wedding planner. I mean, seriously, if this wedding does end up happening Jane better be rocking a Monica Geller headset. I know Happy Endings is often compared to Friends but Jane is an edgier more nymphomaniac version of Monica. Besides, I love both these shows so who really needs to compare anyway?

The reason I say this wedding might not come to fruition is because it would change the dynamic of the entire sitcom. Penny could end up getting divorced, but in general, they don't want everyone to couple off when Max is still single. Besides, didn't everyone notice that intimate Dave and Penny pep-talk about having the weddings of your dreams?. I know he said he loved Alex and that was all that mattered, but Penny and Dave still gravitate towards each other with their similarities. Plus Dave and Alex do have their issues. Lots of references to that time she left Dave at the altar.

Then again Brad and Max have their similarities, but we know that's not happening. Love that Jane paired them as a fake gay couple for the expo because they both have the chops to pull off their coupledom flawlessly. Harsh dig with the Paul Giamatti and Tyson Beckford comment though. Max is totally better looking than Giamatti! C'mon now!

Come on boo, it's not like you never thought about it Harvey chocolate Milk. | permalink

Another reason I'm worried Penny and Pete won't make it down the aisle is because Penny will without a doubt turn into a bigger bridezilla than Dave was. Sorry dude, you were not "Chillzilla". Also I wouldn't give Alex a tiny pet when that evil genius thing really only lasted one episode.

I get the P shaped sandwiches for Penny and Pete, but what is with the lowercase b's? | permalink

Oh you adorable idiot savant, we love you. But back to Penny, she didn't even remember to invite their own fiancee to her engagement party! I just hope that she's able to stay happy for more episodes. However if Jane ever makes a jack in the box of herself again, with a voice saying "I'm gonna be your wedding planner" I want this wedding kaput. That was so creepy.

So which of this week's Happy Endings did you like better? Will Penny and Pete make it? Will Penny and Dave ever hook up?

ABC Pushes Happy Endings to Friday Night

ABC has taken one major step closer to canceling one of our favorite sitcoms.

The network announced last night that Happy Endings will move to Fridays beginning in March, as the new Tuesday night lineup will consist of Celebrity Wife Swap (seriously) at 8/7c and then The Taste at 9/8c.

Jane's Big Lie

Our feelings exactly.

Happy Endings will be off until March 29 and will then air original episodes from 8-9 that night. This will be its regular time slot/schedule until all Season 3 episodes have aired.

It's a sad day to be a Happy fan.

Happy Endings Review: Power

It's been a hot minute since Happy Endings has graced our television screens. "In the Heat of Noche" marked the return from its extended hiatus and all I have to say is "save Happy Endings!"

I don't know about you guys, but I need to see Max and Penny tripping on Mexican sleeping medication every week!

Saving Chuckles & Huggs

That's right, it's all about the "Noche-Tussin." If there was really a drug that prevented people from over texting or drunk dialing a guy or girl in their lives, people would be selling kidneys on the black market to get their hands on it. That's just what happened in this technology addicted generation!

Max and Penny are always at their best when they play off of each other. They're best friends as well as a perfect comedic match. So what do you buy about the power struggle? Do you abide by the not texting or calling rule? How far would you go to regain the edge in that power struggle?

Meanwhile, the rest of the gang was busy following Whoopi Goldberg's lead in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. Brad took his wifey Jane's advice in order to save Chuckles and Hugs. He put his business knowledge to work and hired his friends to help spice things up. Dave was the singing act, Alex did semi-illegal arts and crafts, and Jane...well Jane just tried to fit in with the kids.

Jane: You use your special skill to save the gym!

Brad: Wait how am I supposed to give fourteen consecutive orgasms to a brick building? | permalink

By the end of the episode everyone realized they had gone a little overboard. Max and Penny were hot messes who were hooked on illegal sleeping meds and Alex was running a child labor ring to make popular bracelets. Not the smartest idea.

Another thing I worry wasn't the smartest idea was ABC's decision to move this show to Fridays. I can only hope that people still tuned in after over a month without Happy Endings. Hit the comments and let us know what you thought of the comedy's return!

USA Network to Pick Up Happy Endings?

There may be a happy ending for Happy Endings after all.

Just not on ABC.

Halloween Theme

Deadline confirms that USA has interest in the beloved comedy if, as expected, ABC cancels it after the upcoming season.

There are many financial hurdles that would need to be cleared first, but USA will start airing reruns of Modern Family in the fall and executives believe new episodes of Happy Endings would make for an ideal comedic pairing.

Do we even need to bother asking: Would you want to see USA pick up Happy Endings?

Never before has Dave's steak truck gotten so much attention in two consecutive Happy Endings episodes!

In "The Incident," Penny accidentally got the truck stolen when she borrowed it to move furniture. In the second installment, "Bros Before Bros," Dave went to war with a fellow steak truck owner known as "The Brazilian."

The Happy Endings happy hour was filled with sisterly fights, forbidden romances and a life sized Brad doll. Let's discuss.

Penny's Wedding Day

In the first half of the hour, Max's hairdresser died and he needed a replacement. After trusting Dave for some stupid reason, he ended up looking like his clone, highlighted goatee and all. Jane and Alex to the rescue! Besides better skills, Jane and Alex's hair dresser played by RuPaul had a major advantage: gossip. Max being Max, he was obviously enticed and went to town with his new information. He's a troublemaker, he couldn't resist!

Everybody knows there are just certain things that are better left unsaid, especially within families. I have four siblings all who are married so I technically now have 8. You gotta know when to pick and choose your battles. Sometimes airing your grievances can just make it all worse, especially when you're Jane and Alex. The girls fighting went all the way back to childhood when there was an all out cold war.

Max and Brad did a little digging and found an article that talked about how the girls made up. Question posed by Max, what's creepier: the random anatomically correct doll of Brad or the fact that a local newspaper was super obsessed with Jane and Alex? At least the paper had some answers. Nana Kerkovich to the rescue and all was right in the world again! Also Dave found his truck and had to sanitize it after the guy who stole it, admitted to making love to the meat...literally.

On to the second episode: Steak Me Home Tonight got even more attention as Dave braced for opening day at Wrigley field when he'd have to face his steak truck rival: The Brazilian. With the girls off planning Penny's wedding, the boys helped Dave plot to win the steak-off. Sidenote, how timely was Alex's comment about North Korea:

You had Jane plan you a backup wedding in an underground bunker just in case North Korea quote grew a pair, but you never thought of who's gonna walk you down the aisle? | permalink

What's scary about that timely and relevant comment was that it was made my Alex. Did you see her 4th grade book report that Max found? "F, is this a joke?" Amazing. Enter Penny's long lost dad who abandoned her to be an actor at a young age. He had a hard road with having to impress Jane, but he managed to do so after buying Penny her dream dress and getting involved in the steak truck showdown.

That showdown may never have happened but of course Max had to make trouble once again and sleep with the competition's son. Oh Max, what are we going to do with you? If it weren't for the fact that your actions resulted in a Ladybugs reference, I might have been kinda mad at your for messing things up for Dave!

He's not lying. He once Ladybugs'd himself into a Jr. High girls soccer tournament, bet against the team, and threw the game. | permalink

Amazing and under-appreciated movie reference. This is why I love Happy Endings! I thought this week's back to back episodes were better than last weeks. How about you guys? Hit the comments!

Happy Endings Review: The End of the Affair

If 2012 was the "year of Penny," then tonight was the "night of Penny and Pete." Alas, in case you thought the writers forgot about Penny's upcoming nuptials the way ABC forgot about how awesome Happy Endings is, fear not. "She's Got Game Night" and "The Storm Before the Calm" were all about P & P.

Unfortunately, it wasn't all smooth sailing. While Penny and Pete whooped butt at couples game night, even beating Jane and Brad (say what?!?), they found that they had bigger issues to deal with.

A Competitive Game Night

It started off innocently enough. Penny was jazzed about the wedding when she ran into an old friend. Suddenly her subconscious seeped in and she was questioning whether she and Pete knew each other all that well. When Jane added to that insecurity by saying that Penny and Pete had the rest of their lives to get to know each other, Penny decided she needed to prove that no, everything was just dandy. What better way to prove how well you know your significant other than couples game night?!

Competing against Jane in anything is...well, frightening to say the least. The only thing that turns Jane on more than competition is making lists and people agreeing with her. So it was off the races. Imagine walking into Jane and Brad's apartment to find them chanting in matching track suits?

Winners win and losers lose and alcoholics they just booze. They win at drinking, that’s their thing but our thing’s always just win-ning. We’re Brad and Jane, let’s start the game. Sup suckas? | permalink

In the end, couples game night really didn't prove anything. Brad and Jane tanked and they're one of the best TV couples of all time. Even Max and stalker Scottie did better than them! Alex and Dave never showed because of the dumbest b-story ever about Dave and some psychics. Let's not even go there. Ultimately Penny just didn't have that gut feeling about Pete. Cue: the breakup cocoon.

The second episode "The Storm Before The Calm" was all about how Penny deals with a breakup. I have to say, that scene where Max walked into Penny's breakup cocoon too early when she was all Exorcist style was hilarious. The play wasn't my favorite part of the episode. It was just a little over the top.

I know, I know Happy Endings is over the top and that's why we love it. Just something about "The Black Plague: A Love Story" was a touch too much on the crazy scale. I kind of preferred the Max and Alex idiot tastemaker scam. Watching the two of them try and sell products and not realize they were getting completely gipped was awesome; As was how jealous Jane acted not to be included.

By the way, you know you're not promoting a cool product when you get Dave's endorsement. Case in point:

Those are cool. And this is coming from a guy who wore a bandana around his jeans leg in high school, so I know what I speak of. | permalink

Oh boy. The bandana around the jeans leg. I can picture it so well! At least Dave and Brad saved the day with Penny's disastrous play. Who knew how easily they would both be seduced into the theater world? Sorry Derek, but Brad definitely would've made a better Clete.

Well R.I.P. Penny & Pete. You guys had a good run. I was proud of Penny for dealing with her breakup in a new way. What did you all think of the latest Happy Endings happy hour?

Happy Endings Review: Penny Made a Boo-Boo

Penny’s attempts at trying to move on past Pete land her in the arms of the car czar in “The Ballad of Lon Saforsky.

The czar is just about the last man on Earth anyone would want to have sex with, and so naturally poor choices Penny ends up unable to quit him; much like Brad can’t stop inviting people over when he’s in an awkward or uncomfortable situation.

The Coupon Challenge

Penny’s desire to find a hookup to get Pete out of her system is perfectly fine, but it become old pretty quickly as I watched Penny continually jump into bed with the Czar. If Jane hadn’t done some smoothing over he may have never left her. Which is the biggest gripe I had: Penny makes a big decision to break of the engagement with Pete – showing a lot of courage and backbone on her part – and then she winds up stuck in another relationship with very little courage or backbone.

Max’s decision to enter the best gay man pageant isn’t the first one Max has entered, but the tricks and antics between Max, Alex, and Dave make it enjoyable. Dave’s impersonation of Sonny and Cher is both genius and slightly creepy, and Alex attempting to school Max in throwing just the right amount of shade also got me.

"Un-sabotagable" is the stronger comedy of the hour, however, with Mark Paul Gosselaar making a quick cameo as one of Max’s very upset ex-boyfriends.

Eliza Coupe has proven to be versatile with Jane’s neuroses, and is able to keep them fresh and interesting even when they’re bordering on overused. Jane’s attempts to make over Max, her pull down diagrams for areas of improvement, and learning that Max’s life is so terrible that not even his ex wants to attempt to sabotage are hilarious.

Jane using her powers for good and making over Max is a great start to sabotage-ability, and I really enjoy seeing put together Max once in a while, but we all knew it was never going to last. Max is the type of guy who is going to use his front door for a headboard and find gum in his hair.

Dave’s attempts at sabotaging Alex’s groupons are mostly a reflection of him being just as crazy and impulsive as Alex, but in different areas. Dave talks a big game, but he’s sometimes just a carbon copy of Alex with a better vocabulary.  Chase’s subsequent monologue of doom for Max at the closing of the episode is rather amazing – no, not the monologue itself – but the reaction it brings out in the rest of everyone else. They couldn’t care less about what Chase said only his perfect timing.

Happy Endings Review: All in the Family

$

The final Happy Endings happy hour of Happy Endings season 3 was all about family. In the first episode "Deuce Babylove 2: Electric BabyDeuce" we had a visit from Penny's mom Dana and Dave's dad Big dave, played by Megan Mullally and Michael McKean respectively. In "Brothas and Sisters" Jane and Alex's big sister Brooke was in town for her wedding.

Now I know what you're all thinking...there's a third Kerkovich sister?!? I was pretty darn surprised myself. All you really need to know about her is that she out-Jane's Jane. But we'll get to that in a minute.

Parental Shocker

It's no secret that Happy Endings has suffered at the hands of ABC scheduling, first getting knocked out for a month and a half for Celebrity Wife Swap with Coolio and Kate Gosselin. Really America? That's sad. Then it was bumped to Fridays which everyone knows is kind of a death sentence in the TV world. If in fact, these were the finale two episodes of the series and it's not rescued by USA Networks, then at least Happy Endings had some consistency and went out the way it came in: wedding chaos!

Double points for consistency because it was another Kerkovich sister wedding: the one sister nobody knew existed, big sis Brooke. Apparently Jane and Alex have an older sister and she is more neurotic, organized, and uptight than Jane but not even remotely as fun. When Brooke is around Jane loses it and kind of regresses into Alex. Alex just stays Alex and enjoys her role as the baby. If an unraveling Jane isn't bad enough, Brad was shaken up when he found out Brooke's fiance Elliot is black and wouldn't have to endure the same ordeal he did with the racist Kerkovich relatives.

With Brad proclaiming himself the "Jackie Robinson of the Kerkovich family" and Jane repeating the mantra "strength, courage, composure, no carbs" it's no wonder everything else almost fell to pieces. The world is off its axis when our main couple are not themselves. I'm not going to lie, watching Jane meltdown and get weird Brooke-induced sweats was pretty funny. Brad's meltdown led to a lot of incoherent babbling and bug-outs, but Damon Wayans Jr. always excels in his comic delivery. Max had it pretty on the money when he told Jane:

Jane you’re actin extra nuts, and I’m not talking about mistaking the teaspoon with tablespoon kinda nuts, I’m talking about Mel Gibson downing a 5-hour-energy and showing up at a Bar Mitzvah kinda nuts. | permalink

I think the second episode was probably my favorite of the two because I love when the gang is all together. However, Penny and Dave freaking out about their parents adopting and regressing into total children was also a riot. I especially love Megan Mullally and Michael McKeon as guest stars. I loved Penny and Dave's reaction when they thought the announcement was an engagement and Dave quietly dropped a Rachel Zoe "I die."

Even better than Dave putting on his best Zoe face was the fact that he dropped a line from on-screen girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert's starring role in The Girl Next Door. The juice was worth the squeeze. I'm not sure if that was intentionally done by the writers, but if it was I want them to know that this reviewer noticed it and appreciated it!! Also the two of their dumbasses trying to make the baby cry was so stupidly funny.

When all else fails, there's nothing like some good old-fashioned physical comedy and competition between Brad, Jane, Max, and Alex. The fact that they noted that nobody solves problems by tennis matches past the 80s was amazing. It brought on images of movies like Trading Places and the tennis montage was well done. Happy Endings knows all of the obvious assumptions people make and beat them to the punchline by cracking the joke themselves.

Max: I wouldn’t say we spend that much time together, I mean just breakfast 4 or 5 times a week before work.

Dave:  And drinks during the day most days, not everyday but definitely every evening.

Penny: And sure we always deliver news in person. | permalink

A great hour of television and what I truly hope isn't the last we'll see of Happy Endings. Were you surprised Dave and Alex broke up? What did you think of Brooke Kerkovich? Who had the best lines? What did you think of the season 3 finale episodes? Hit the comments!

18 Canceled TV Shows We Can't Forget: BRING THEM BACK!!!!!!!!

With the number of shows on television, it makes sense we lose more than we gain, right?

Some of the shows that have been canceled stick with us. Their loss causes us pain. We miss them. We hope for reunion movies and to find other people who might share our feelings.

The most recent case in point: Witches of East End, whose axing after two seasons had the Internet buzzing and complaining last week.

Below, we've assembled a list of programs that can still bring, a tear to the eye at the thought we'll never see the characters we fell in love with and the stories they shared ever again.

Happy Endings
The cast was ah-mah-zing, as was their undeniable chemistry. When it got unceremoniously canceled, all I wanted to do was crawl into a Max-like hibernation until Jane and Brad had their Annual Spring Smackdown on ABC and got them to reverse its decision. That sadly never came to pass. But at least there's the DVDs! -- Winston Rice

Whether it was one season and done or 72 years long, when a series disappears, it takes characters who have come to life with it and it proves one sad fact about television:

There aren't always Happy Endings.

We've shown you ours, now you show us yours! Hit the comments with some of canceled series that left you scarred, bitter and maybe a touch weepy.

21 TV Cancellations That Still Hurt... A Lot

From one-season wonders to long-running shows that still had great potential, the list of painfully canceled television shows could run a lot longer than we have time to cover here.

But we polled many on the TV Fanatic staff and came up with a rundown of sitcoms and dramas that we still can't believe have been shut down.

Some of these go back many years. Some of these just recently occurred.

But all of them hurt. A lot.

Gather up your strength, break out the tissues and don't give up hope: heck, if Full House and The X-Files can come back in some form, who knows what the future holds for these favorites...

1. Firefly

Firefly
Admittedly I didn't watch Firefly until fellow Castle fans compelled me to buy the dvds, but by 30 minutes into the pilot I knew I'd be broken hearted by the end. The writing, the characters, the unique setting, I fell in love with it all. I laughed out loud during "Our Mrs Reynolds" gasped during "War Stories" and almost cried during "The Message" Like a leaf on the wind, I will always get a wistful ache in my heart that there isn't more Firefly to enjoy. -- Christine Orlando

2. Veronica Mars

Veronica mars
The modern day answer to Nancy Drew. Veronica Mars only lasted 3 seasons, but became a cult hit and eventually became a highly successful and much talked about movie. Veronica was everything missing from other female characters on TV. She was a complicated, tough, smart, witty, resilient, emotional, badass who just happened to be a teenage girl. The series followed Veronica as she tried to solve various mysteries in the fictional Neptune, California. This show may have seemed like a teenage show on the surface, but the writing was so brilliant and way darker than one would expect dealing with rape, murder, abuse, class warfare, and race. The show was cancelled after 3 seasons, but thankfully fans got closure when the Kickstarter funded movie came to fruition last year. -- Amanda Steinmetz

4. Ghost Whisperer

Ghost whisperer
The show aired on CBS for five years and never got below 7 million viewers on average. While it was being aired on the Friday night death slot, seven episodes of the fourth season garnered more than 11 million viewers. Unfortunately, in 2010 it was canceled and viewers, characters and ghosts were all left with some unfinished business. -- Amanda Wolf

5. The Finder

The finder
A fun, quirky spin-off to Bones, The Finder is a show that should have lasted longer than one season. Its cast was dynamic, and its concept was unique. Geoff Stultz played Walter, an odd war veteran with an uncanny ability for finding almost anything. He solved crimes, helped find prized possessions, and got himself in plenty of trouble. The worst part is that the season finale ended with a pretty serious cliffhanger as Walter was sent to jail. The show began as an episode of Bones, and also featured crossover episodes with visits from Jack Hodgins and Lance Sweets (RIP). -- Ashley Bissette Sumerel

6. The OC

The oc
Ryan, Marissa, Seth, Summer, Sandy, Kirsten, Julie Cooper-Nickel! We watched as Ryan's life was turned around by his being brought into the Cohen household, and none of us were ever the same. Ryan Murphy wasn't afraid to kill a main character, so we said goodbye to Marissa Cooper at the end of Season 3. Then we said goodbye to everyone else when the series was canceled at the end of Season 4, just 8 episodes shy of syndication. Sigh. Californiaaaaaaaaa! -- Miranda Wicker

It's not just about ghouls and goblins, although some of these parties have actual demons on the guest list. Whether it's fearful or funny, Halloween may be the one holiday that every TV show eventually celebrates.

From the nerdiest costumes to a couple's very first kiss, heartbreaking declarations to the return of lost love and playing epic pranks to the joy of finding full size candy bars in your trick-or-treat bag, these Halloween parties go from hilarious to heart warming.

Don't be scared. The bunnies aren't really evil, at least we don't think so. Check out the 19 most memorable Halloween parties on TV.

1. Castle - "Vampire Weekend"

Castles halloween bash
An investigation into a vampire fetish community eventually wrapped up with Rick Castle throwing an epic Halloween bash for all of his friends. Castle actually wore two costumes in Castle Season 2 Episode 6, “Vampire Weekend” The first was from Nathan Fillion’s cult favorite Firefly character Capt. Mal Reynolds but for the actual party he dressed as one of his favorite authors, Edgar Allen Poe. Our favorites were Lanie as Cat Woman and Martha as Cruella de Vil.

2. How I Met Your Mother - "The Slutty Pumpkin"

How i met your mother the slutty pumpkin
Marshall was Jack Sparrow and Lily the green parrot. Robin's boyfriend broke up with her when he showed up as Hansel but she skipped the Gretel costume. But it was Ted (as a Hanging Chad) waiting to find his Slutty Pumpkin, the girl whose number he lost when Lily threw away his Kit Kat that stole the show. Ten years later Ted finally found the girl (Katie Holmes) but realized that after ten years of searching, the chemistry was gone.

3. Brooklyn Nine-Nine - "Halloween II"

The bet brooklyn nine nine
Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of those shows that knows how to do Halloween right, using the holiday to provide the perfect backdrop for a hilarious and tense competition between two intelligent cops. Jake and Captain Holt spend each Halloween trying to get the best of each other. In Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 1 Episode 6, Jake proved his cunning and his worth, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 2 Episode 4 had Captain Holt completely dominate the competition. We hope this goes on for a long time!

4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - "Fear, Itself"

Buffy the vampire slayer season season 4 episode 4 fear itself
Buffy and her friends dress up for a Halloween party at a frat house inhabitated by a demon that feeds on their individual fears. Who wouldn’t have fun with that? Buffy goes as Little Red Riding Hood, Giles is wearing a sombrero, Willow is Joan of Arc and Xander goes as James Bond but our favorite is Anya in a bunny costume because what could be more terrifying than bunnies?

5. Cougar Town - “You Don’t Know How it Feels”

Cougar town you dont know how it feels
Cougar Town Season 2 Episode 6 had a lot of heart to go along with the laughs. Since her mother’s death, Jules was desperate to find a way to bond with her Dad but he seemed to be interested in anything but that at her Halloween party. On the strangely funny side we had Ellie and Laurie dressing as each other or Travis dressing as Andy. Now that’s something we’d only see on Cougar Town.

6. Bones - "Mummy in the Maze"

Bones mummy in the maze
A mandatory Halloween party at the Jeffersonian meant mummified bodies, a hay maze, an amusement park funhouse and a shootout with a clown. What more could you want from Bones Season 3 Episode 5? How about the the most memorable moment of the entire episode? Temperance Brennan decked out in her Wonder Woman outfit!
